This Chattanooga renovation transformed an iconic North Shore diner into a fresh, modern salad bar while embracing the building’s distinctive butterfly roof and retro character. The renovation addressed several functional challenges within the compact building, including raising the floor behind the serving bar to create a seamless connection with the dining area, combining the footprint of two smaller stalls into one larger ADA compliant unisex bathroom, and introducing a new HVAC distribution system for more even comfort throughout the space. The new ductwork follows the slope and angles of the butterfly roof to minimize its visual impact. The design leans into a playful palette of cool mint, bright white, teal, and bold patterns, carried from the exterior through the interior. Sputnik-inspired lights, striped awnings, colorful terrazzo flooring, vibrant tile, globe pendants, and geometric wallpaper create a cohesive visual identity consistent with the architecture. The result is a space that feels both fresh and nostalgic, pairing thoughtful technical upgrades with a bold design that celebrates the personality of this small but memorable structure
