The renovation of Dalton’s historic Depot transforms a long-vacant, deteriorated landmark into a contemporary office and community meeting space while preserving the character and craftsmanship of its 19th-century origins. The design strategy centered on revealing and celebrating the building’s historic fabric, including restoring the original trackside platform, removing a 1970s addition, exposing the multi-wythe structural brick construction, and restoring the original floors and architectural details. A refined new conference room provides a contemporary intervention within the historic volume, creating a clear contrast between old and new. Custom details including recreated exterior corbels, glazed openings into the historic brick walls, and a brass floor inlay commemorating the building’s original construction, further connect the renewed space to its history. The result is a thoughtful adaptive reuse project that preserves an important piece of Dalton’s architectural heritage while giving it a purposeful new life at the center of the community.
