A Place for Everyone: Designing a Family Lodge Built for Generations

This new-build family hunting lodge was designed with one goal in mind: to gather everyone under one roof. With space for all four children, nine grandchildren, and plenty of room for muddy boots (and dogs) at the door, this home is a true family retreat. Every detail was thoughtfully considered to ensure that everyone has a place to sleep, a seat at the table, and a reason to stay awhile.

Inspired by the simplicity of a barn and the comfort of a well-loved home, the lodge blends rustic charm with everyday livability. From the dog-washing station to the upstairs playroom, each space was designed to welcome, relax, and make memories—season after season.

The main floor is designed for gathering, with an open kitchen, living, and dining space centered around a stunning sixteen-foot-wide window overlooking the surrounding woods. The view brings the outdoors in, offering a peaceful backdrop as deer wander past throughout the day.

In the design stage, we drew one long table big enough to seat 16, but they already outgrew that, so they opted for a dining hall look with four tables and room to grow.

A large central island anchors the kitchen, complemented by generous storage and a spacious pantry tucked beneath the stairs—perfect for feeding a crowd. In the living room, three cozy sofas are arranged around a stone fireplace, layered with blankets and flanked by shelves filled with books, family photos, and naturally shed antlers. The result is a warm, welcoming space that feels lived-in, personal, and made for time together.

Throughout the home, natural materials set the tone for a space that feels both grounded and personal. The main living areas and bathrooms are wrapped in warm wood shiplap, adding texture and continuity, while the bedrooms feature board-and-batten walls capped with a slim ledge—perfect for displaying photos, small treasures, and meaningful finds. As the house settles into daily life, it’s already beginning to tell the family’s story, slowly filling with mementos and artifacts that will continue to accumulate as memories are made on the farm for years to come.

The screened porch is designed as an extension of the home’s living space, fully embracing outdoor life. Oversized sliding screen doors open wide to the yard, blurring the line between inside and out. A substantial fireplace with a generous sitting hearth anchors the room, surrounded by comfortable seating and a sleek black stone grill tucked into the corner—creating a space made for lingering evenings, shared meals, and easy gatherings in every season.

The property unfolds like a carefully planned retreat, with spaces designed for both play and pause. A small pond with a simple dock invites slow afternoons of fishing, while a nearby play set—paired with Adirondack chairs—gives adults a front-row seat to the fun. A screened porch with soaring ceilings and a grand stone fireplace anchors outdoor living, while a dedicated shed houses the boat and four-wheelers. A generous circular drive offers room for everyone to arrive with ease, all leading back to the house at the center—where memories are made and shared, season after season.
