Expanding a historic home is always a careful balance between honoring what exists and creating something that feels new and special. In this primary suite addition, every decision was guided by that yin and yang.
The footprint itself presented a unique design challenge. The size and shape of the addition were dictated by property lines and the alignment of existing second-floor windows, requiring a thoughtful approach to both massing and flow. Rather than forcing a contrast, we leaned into the language of the original four square home, allowing the new suite to feel like a seamless extension of its architecture.
Inside the bedroom, the goal was to create a space that felt quietly special. A plaster fireplace anchors the room, and a cozy seating area is tucked into the window nook. Above, a wood plank ceiling vaults in three directions beneath the hipped roof, adding volume and architectural interest without overwhelming the space. The result is a room with an old-world charm that feels as though it has always belonged.

The primary bathroom builds on that same narrative, beginning with the vanities as the foundation for the entire design. From there, each element was selected to balance cohesion with indulgence. A soaking tub positioned in front of a picture window creates a moment of calm and connection to the outdoors, while a generously scaled shower with dual showerheads offers a daily luxury. Large-format floor tile grounds the space, and carefully chosen sconces and mirrors add softness. The palette was intentionally neutral, allowing materials and light to take center stage, and resulting in a space that feels like a true retreat.

Tucked beyond, the primary closet offers a spacious walk-in experience with direct access to the home gym. That unexpected connection adds both convenience and a touch of personalization to the suite. This project is a reflection of thoughtful interventions shaped by site constraints and established architectural language. Every detail was considered to ensure the addition feels not only cohesive, but also quietly extraordinary.
